Kikapu is the traditional Swahili name for a woven basket bag, woven from dried palm leaves. It is a skill traditionally carried out by older (retired) men in the village. The art of weaving is known as 'suka' in Swahili. Our bags have been Suka(d) by Ali Bakari on the Kenyan coast, we'll share more on his story soon.

The brass and leather work is done by the lovely Jennifer in her workshop in Thika. Jennifer uses discarded leather off cuts which would otherwise be headed to land fill and the brass is made from melted down old padlocks and the like. The eyelets were put in in Cape Town (because that's a bit fancy for kenyan handcraft ;) and the ties are made using our garment off-cuts as part of our waste reduction mission.

The basket diameter is approximately 30cm and the height is approximately 35cm (sized vary slightly bag to bag). The leather strap has a buckle at the centre to adjust the length and is attached to a choice of 3 D rings on both sides of the bag with a brass clasp. Each bag comes with 3 ties in each of our Summer collection colours so you can pick and chose which to use according to your daily mood :)
